In another life, Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbot were lead singers for The Beautiful South. Fans of that band’s slyly cutting lyrics may have been sorry to see them split up back in 2007 but some things never change.

Take a look at the lyrics of Real Hope for example:

He wanted the glory he wanted the fame
In limelight he wanted to soak
So he saved up the money and boarded the train
To where they give plastic people real hope

Giving real hope to false people
Telling the world it can sing
False hope to real folk
You can sing, you can sing, you can sing

And if you are in any doubt whatsoever what the song’s about the accompanying VEVO video on on Youtube shows Simon Cowell’s smug kisser as he passes on his version of real hope.

There is no question that Heaton is, and always has been, an excellent songwriter. He has an ability to blend soothing melody with stinging satire that leaves the unsuspecting humming away to a saccharine love song until the punchline hits home. Of course, Jacqui Abbott’s upbeat poppy voice adds to the deception.

Now, with Crooked Calypso released in July the duo are embarking on a sizable UK tour. A few songs from the album have made it to early release including, ‘I Gotta Praise’ – three guesses at what they are digging at this time.
